Original woodblock-style illustration of a fictional ryokan inn

KUROKAWA ONSEN AREA, KUMAMOTO

A quiet mountain inn of wood, steam, and seasonal food. Four rooms named for flowers, two baths, one long dinner.

Rooms named for flowers

Each of our four guest rooms carries the name of a flower or tree. Tatami floors, low tables, futon bedding laid out while you dine, and a quiet view of green in every direction.

Room rates shown are illustrative examples for this concept demo.

The baths

Two baths, one source. Soak under the open sky, then again before bed. Towels and yukata are provided in every room.

Open-air bath

A stone rotenburo set among maples and moss. In the morning it steams in the cool air; at night the sky comes down close. The water is drawn from the area's hot spring source and flows continuously.

  • Open-air rotenburo among the trees
  • Indoor wooden bath with tall windows
  • Private family bath available by reservation
  • Yukata, towels, and toiletries provided

Kaiseki dinner

A seasonal multi-course dinner, served in your room or in the small dining hall. The menu follows the mountain calendar.

From the mountain

Dinner moves through the seasons: spring shoots, summer river fish, autumn mushrooms and chestnuts, winter root vegetables and hot pots. Breakfast is a quieter affair of rice, miso soup, grilled fish, and pickles.

  • Seasonal multi-course dinner, about two hours
  • Served in-room or in the dining hall
  • Vegetarian and allergy-aware menus on request
  • Local sake and tea pairings available

Strolling around the inn

Step outside for an evening stroll. The onsen town lights up after dark, and the paths along the river are made for slow walking in yukata and geta.

Stroll the onsen town

Borrow a town bath-hopping pass and wander between the public baths, or simply walk the lantern-lit streets after dinner. In the daytime, forest paths and small shrines fill an easy half day.

  • Evening light-up along the river walk
  • Nearby public baths within walking distance
  • Forest trails and viewpoints above the town
  • Small shops for local crafts and sweets
